Here’s a note from Michaela: the story of how she became Equity and the results of her first week of auditions in NYC:
In the summer of 2012, I joined the EMC program with the first mainstage show I was cast in at Maine State Music Theatre: A CHORUS LINE (5 weeks) and returned at the end of the same summer in 42ND STREET (5 weeks). The next summer, I was hired as a performance intern with MSMT and did 13 more weeks in LES MISERABLES, GYPSY, MARY POPPINS, & HAIR. Next, I was fortunate to book yet three more shows at MSMT: SISTER ACT, THE MUSIC MAN, & YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (13 weeks). Then, I spent a summer at the Fulton Theatre in PA, doing FOOTLOOSE & SHREK (9 weeks). Last summer, just after finishing college, I was hired back with the Fulton for NEWSIES (another 9 weeks)! Then, I actually turned down a regional equity contract to travel the world as the lead singer on a cruise ship. When my 9-month contract concluded at the end of June 2018 and I got my feet back on solid ground, I applied for Equity Membership knowing: AEA qualifications had dropped from 50 to 25 points; the equity pool would be bigger and it was going to be harder to be seen as a non-union female; I had already turned down my card once while I was in college; and I was just ready to start making a living as a professional doing what I love to do!
August 31, 2018: I was elected into the Actors Equity Association a few weeks ago, and last week was my first opportunity to come to New York to audition. I got this temporary card from the Equity Building in NYC. I managed 12 auditions and 6 callbacks, and I am so happy that everything worked out and I GOT A JOB from my hustle! YAYYY! I will be forever thankful to and grateful for both MSMT (Curt Dale Clark) and Fulton (Marc Robin) and all the pros I worked with at both theatres, for teaching me the on-and-off-stage ropes and shaping me into the professional I am today! MSMT & Fulton will always feel like “home” to me; however, I am excited to expand my resume and work at a new (dream) theatre! I haven’t signed the contract yet, but stay tuned for that news soon! #EquityWorks #MichaelaBolt⚡
